According to observations, RW Sefai experienced a massive eruption that produced a huge gas cloud. As the cloud moved away, it cooled and formed a mass of dust particles that blocked out much of the starlight. As the clouds cleared, the stars and their turbulent environment became visible again. Douglas Gies, director of CHARA, said this could be one of several spectacular eruptions that have rocked RW Cepheus over the past century, and that future such eruptions could cause the star to lose mass.
