A phenomenon that causes perplexity, delight and intrigue among many people, a way of life for some. Of life as of truth, the truth that they try to find under the crop circles goes far beyond the very fantasy that they have displayed. Located mainly, and initially, in the United Kingdom, especially in areas of the south-west of the country. For some decades these forms on earth have appeared in other parts of the world. They are not alien signals or from beyond, it is not the earth speaking to us, or yes, but how the dialogue arises. Although some “cereologists”, as their fans are known according to ‘Pacific Standard’, do not believe it, crop circles exist in a different way than expected by that modern popular culture, and there is a record of it, as well as its relationship with humans, but it may not be enough.
The devil in the center
A woodcut from 1678 is the oldest surviving evidence. In it, the image appears to show a field of oat stalks arranged in a circle, as ‘The Independent’ shows. Although it is true that ‘The Mowing Devil’, as the work is titled, illustrates a folkloric legend between an English farmer invoking the devil in front of a worker. In the middle of that ancient circle is satan himself, with his tail and horns holding a scythe.
Beyond that, the first real crop circles didn’t appear until the 1970s in the English countryside. The number and complexity of the circles then increased steadily until the 1980s and 1990s, when more and more elaborate circles were produced, as the Nature article explains. From that alleged medieval relationship with the devil, the matter became an alien thing. It happened in the late 1990s, when what is now known as Stonehenge loomed in the Wiltshire countryside. By then it was known that some simple circles on earth could be explained as the result of a strange weather phenomenon, or because of fungi, but this one showed a pattern of intelligence. Doubt led him to become one of the most famous and important crop circles in history.
